The city has a total area of 104 sq.km. Located at Hsinchu area, the northwestern part of Taiwan, the site of Hsinchu Science and Industrial Park trespasses the county and the city. Famous universities and research center as Industrial Technology Research Institute, National Tsing-hua University, National Chiao-tung University, Chung-hua University, Education University, Hsuan-chuang University, Yuan-pei University of Science and Technology are all located in this area.

The total population in Hsinchu City is 396,739. Owing to the strong Winter monsoon, the top in Taiwan, Hsinchu is called as Fengzheng (Wind City). The Science and Technology Industrial Park was established in 1980, attracting 398 high-tech companies' investments and 119,000 staff to intensify the competitiveness of Taiwan's high-tech industry in the global market and to create the experience of successfulness of Taiwan economic development.
